Women & Girls

Our Women and Girls programmes here at Foundation of Light aim to provide opportunities for females aged 11 and over to take part in the sport in a local community setting.

We deliver innovative sessions such as UV Football to emphasise the fun, social element of the sport and Soccercise that uses football as way to keep fit.

For participants who want to progress in the game, we provide opportunities to join our Player Development Squads and the Sunderland and Gateshead Girls’ Regional Talent Club, which offers a pathway to develop a career with Sunderland AFC Ladies and the potential to go on and represent England.

SSE Wildcats Football Centres

SSE Wildcats Football Centre, ran in partnership with the FA, give youngsters aged 5-11 with regular opportunities to play football and take part in organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment.

The Centre is run by specialist and qualified Foundation of Light coaches, offering links to local grassroots clubs, Player Development Squads, Sunderland RTC, Football Scholarships and the professional level to ensure there is a clear pathway for the girls into football.

Ha'Weigh the Lasses

Ha’Weigh the Lasses are innovative and fun fitness sessions which aims to improve women’s health through small lifestyle changes, sport and exercise. Participants receive regular BMI readings and nutritional advice, track record booklet with a Fitbit provided for sessions.

The image of women's football has changed dramatically with so many young girls inspired to play football. It is important we raise awareness of the opportunities available to them if they want to follow a career within the sport.

Steph Houghton, England Women's captain

When I was younger I was the only girl of my age playing football and it often became a bit competitive. Playing alongside girls at SAFC's Centre of Excellence not only helped me develop as a player but also as an individual too.
