Windy Gyle Challenge Walk

The Foundation’s Windy Gyle Challenge is a long distance walk in the Cheviot Hills of Northumberland.

From Barrowburn, we will walk up The Street to join the Pennine Way to the summit of Windy Gyle. We then return via Uswayford and Middle Hill. The walk is around 20k/12.5m in length and should take around six hours to complete.

Weather permitting, the views are panoramic and spectacular!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What do I need to bring?

We will issue a kit list closer to the time, but you will need to wear suitable comfortable outdoor gear (no jeans or cotton t shirts), including walking boots and a waterproof jacket. You will also need to bring your own packed lunch and drinks.

  • How do I get there?

We will meet in the car park at Alwinton, then drive up the valley to the start point at Wedder Leap.

  • Is there an age limit?

Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome to join us for the whole walk.

  • Can I bring my dog?

Well behaved dogs are welcome, however must be kept on a lead. And must be fit!

  • How fit do I have to be?

It is a reasonably long walk with several moderate ascents, so you do need to be relatively fit. We highly recommend you do go out for some long walks, and also include a few hills.

  • How much food and drink will I need?

There is nowhere to top up on the route, so you will need to carry food, drinks, and snack items. We recommend carrying at least two litres of liquid.
